A Brief Introduction by Binkley (e-mail)
When this weekly series was first introduced, I immediately started to brainstorm how I would review these issues. There were 15 stories per comic, so it seemed to make some sense to write reviews for each of the 15 stories. I came up with a variety of different ways to present the text, but ultimately I decided to wait until I actually read the first issue before making a decision. After reading it, what struck me the most is that a single page of a story is not enough to write a review. There just isn’t enough to critique the plot, structure, or character. And then it hit me. I can provide my impression of the stories, my thoughts and ideas of what struck me as I was reading. So, that is what you’ll get each week. However, when the weekly series is done, I will go back and review the entire story, much as I do for a single issue of a comic.
Impressions by Binkley (e-mail)
This week, Kamandi takes the big spot on the cover, while Sgt. Rock (last week’s big circle) and Hawkman (the rotating circle) move around. With one week left, that means Teen Titans, Demon and Catwoman, Supergirl, and Batman. If I had the guess which one gets the final issue, I would have to say Batman. I am surprised that Supergirl didn’t get the big spot. With Amanda Conner on art, I would think.
Would Batman really have fallen for the lipstick ruse? It looks to me as if Luna shot the window to make it easier to jump outside as opposed to shooting Batman. Not a smart move. It’ll bite you in the ass later. If you get the chance, shoot your opponent and then run away.
I don’t know why, but all I could think at the end of Green Lantern was, what the hell is he wearing? Is that supposed to be a gymnastic leotard? Anyway, these thoughts come when nothing much happens, like this week.
So, I was right. This week in Teen Titans we get the exposition of hell as we learn the true identity of Trident and why. Sad part is, the “twist” was nothing special and didn’t really make me rethink the previous installments (the way a twist should). That is what happened with Deadman when it is revealed the pretty girl is really an ugly hag. A lot of drunk men have that exact same problem.
I am not sure we needed the entire strip of Strange Adventures to tell us the fate of the ape. It was kinda implied last week and I think the single panel of the ape in the museum would have sufficed. The rest of it felt like filler.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Hawkman, but is it just me or is wrong for Aquaman to save the day in the Hawkman strip? I’ll hold off my ire until next week.
Look, more punching in Superman. Just like last week. Also, took him long enough to remember Lois. This is one of the strips that took 12 strips when it really should’ve been about 4 or so.
Up to this point, Supergirl has been one of the amusing strips with the great story of Krypto and Streaky going nuts. This strip, with the attack by the astronauts is so far out of left field that is doesn’t quite fit in with the other weeks. Hopefully, next week we’ll get back to the funny,
I absolutely adore the layouts for The Flash. It stars at the top left, with the title included as part of the dialogue and then works its way to the bottom right. Plus, the way the dialogue naturally wraps around; at no point was I lost trying to follow what was supposed to happen. And with the way Barry is holding on to Iris for dear life as it spirals downward.
Hey, in Sgt. Rock can they start singing, “Reunited and it feels so good.” How many bullets did Rock take t the back? The Nazi was holding a machine gun and judging by the speed lines it looks like about four bullets hit him. Sgt. Rock is one tough mother.
There was a great question in The Demon and Catwoman about the iambic pentameter. I have a difficult time reading the Demon’s speech, but then I think it is because I keep expecting the damn thing to rhyme and it doesn’t.
I am not quite sure why Iron is a vice grip in Metal Men, but I suppose it works. I don’t know why but I get a kick of the Metal Men working together, suing their various powers in weird ways,
I am not sure if I should cry or laugh in Metamorpho with the line about the “element of surprise.” Actually, I think I’ll laugh.
I had to look it up. The shot that Kamandi takes at the end seems impossible. He hit an ape standing 500 feet off the ground (the height of the Washington Monument, minus the top). But I guess when you best and only chance to, you know, do it, is gone, you’d be mighty upset as well.
And, once again, I didn’t bother to read Wonder Woman. Yeah, I know. I stare at it for a few moments and think maybe I should give it a chance, but then my old-man eyes can’t quite make out the lettering and I give up. However, I should mention that the huge panel is beautifully drawn.
