Synopsis

Then…Solstice’s father explains that he has faith that light can overcome darkness.  Now…Rankor, a demon with ten heads, has taken the Teen Titans prisoner to fuel his energy.  The only ones free are Beast Boy and Solstice.   They attack Rankor and his horde of demons, eventually freeing the others.  As the team take stock of themselves, Raven claims that the source of their torment is not the realm of demons, but rather Solstice.  The rest of the team calms down Raven.  Meanwhile, Rankor and his demon horde comes after them.  Solstice then confronts Rankor.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

This is a very sloppy and poor issue.  It starts off with a flashback that is so obvious in what Krul wants to set up for the rest of the issue that it almost becomes laughable.  I mean, who could not see Gar turning in the giant ape or Solstice turning on her light to fight Rankor?  Granted, Solstice doesn’t take on Rankor until the end, but you knew it was coming.  Just reread that first page and you can see the entire issue begin set-up.  Mind you, I don’t mind subtle foreshadowing; however, this was a blunt braining.   To make it worse, the issue is rather thin, with much of it taken by the attack on Rankor and the rescue of the Teen Titans.  Yes, the issue needs the action scene so Beast Boy can come to the rescue, but I think it goes on for far too long only to reach a point where the fight will need to continue.  Ultimately, I think this issue could’ve been shortened tremendously (especially that first page) and it would’ve worked better.

What the hell is going on with Raven?  Part of me is asking in terms of the plot and the story, as her actions seem to be random and probably not entirely under her control.  But another part of me is asking in terms of the writing and the structure of the story.  I mean, it is very odd that Raven would proclaim Solstice the problem, yet the very next panel it is almost as if the story her accusation never took place.  What the hell?
