Synopsis
In Titans Tower, Eddie Bloomberg tires to deal with the loss of powers and what he should do now and whether or not he belongs on the team. Kid Eternity suggests Eddie should find out more about his deal with Neron by offering to take him to hell. There, Eddie learns he never signed his deal with Neron. Suddenly, Blaze arrives and offers Eddie the same deal. Eddie is about to accept when Kid Eternity stops him. Kid Eternity then shows Eddie is Aunt, who convinces Eddie to not take the deal and that he has his whole life in front of him. Eddie reluctantly agrees.

That is not the ending that I would have predicted. At some point I’ve got to think that Red Devil is going to get his powers back and it seemed like it would happen here. The fact that it didn’t is a little surprising. This is not a bad thing, mind you. I am just pointing out that McKeever ossed a curve ball at the end. Of course, the story does hint how (the metagene) Eddie will retrieve his powers eventually, so it will happen sooner or later. Apparently not here. Regardless of the ending, this was a very good story; I liked the focus on these two characters and I liked how McKeever gave them a chance to do more than just appear in a plot driven story. This was all about the characters and how they are dealing with their situation and McKeever delivers with a well done issue.
Having said that, however, for as much as I like this issue, I do have quibbles with the overall story, which for the past couple of issues has been very schizophrenic, with the recruitment drive, followed by the appearance of Brother Blood, followed by this issue and the focus on Red Devil. While individual moments make sense (such as Brother Blood’s escape, Red Devil’s loss of powers, etc.) the overall whole story seems like a random roulette wheel; wherever it lands, that’ll be the story for the next issue. There has got to be some kind of overall plot or story to these past several issues, but as to what it might be, I have no idea.
Origins & Omens

COMMENTARY
I don’t quite know why Ed Benes, the regular penciler for Justice League of America is doing this particular origin, but not the one for the book he is supposed to be penciling. Regardless, it is interesting how this origin focuses mostly on the history of the team as seen in this book. And, of course, the origin is mostly concerned wit looking forward rather than backward. As for the “omen,” the one in Wonder Woman shows a pregnant girl, just as we see here. If it were Wonder Girl, it would kill two rabbis with the proverbial one stone. Or something like that.
