McKeever’s continued exploration of the various new characters introduced to the Teen Titans in the last two years continues with the focus on Miss Martian. By now the formula has been established as we follow Miss Martian, learn about her emotional issue before the Terror Titans swoop in to capture her. Essentially, this is the third issue in a row to feature the exact same plot, but with a different character. It works because the characters McKeever has spotlighted were the newer team members and, as such, have not had the time to stand out. So, in that regard, this issue works, as we learn more about M’gann, much like Eddie and Rose in the previous two issues, to give her the depth.
However, as much as these past several issues have worked to highlight the lesser known team members, I think the time has come to gather the team together. The core of this title is the relationship among the team members, something that has largely been missing due to the structure of the stories. McKeever needs to get back to that; hopefully the final page with M’gann and Eddie will be a sign of things to come.
I found the scene with Robin declining to help M’gann to be a little strange. I understand what McKeever is going for by having Robin refuse; he wants to create a rift between all of the team members to make them feel alone, rather than as a family. And I suppose Robin’s reasons for not doing it make a certain amount of sense. But, I would imagine that forging documents is something that Batman has done for himself and Robin on several occasions and, let’s face it, how the heck could a Martian get legal documents in the first place.
