Review by Binkley (e-mail)

As someone who has dabbled a little bit in fiction writing (what? you’re surprised?), I have found that some of the quickest writing to do is exposition.  It is all telling (we went here, did this, found that, etc.) with very little showing because it most cases what is being told is the material that we already know and need to be reminded about or it is material that fills in the blanks.  Both of these apply to this issue.  Much of the issue provides the history of Kid Devil while the other half explains how he became a true demon rather than a kid in a costume.  As such, this is a very quick read, but it is not all that satisfying of a comic.  Yes, it helps to fill in the gaps in Eddie’s past, but the story is damn predictable.  While I like the character development and a little bit of the angst given to Eddie, the reasons to create that angst is so lame.

I am a little hazy on why Eddie could not trust Danny when he learns the secret of his Aunt’s death.  Am I missing something?  Is it because he failed to tell Eddie the truth?  Is it because the accident occurred out a selfish need to be rich and famous?  How does all of this lead to a lack of trust?  I can see hate and anger, but I am not sure how trust plays into this.  What exactly does Eddie not trust?  That Danny will do the right thing?  That Danny cares little about others?  Why exactly does Eddie trust Danny in the first place since all Eddie ever got was grief about being Kid Devil.  Now that I think about it, I think this is the crux of the situation.  We need to know why Eddie trusts him in the first place before we can understand the pain of not trusting him.  If that makes sense.

It is interesting that there is no mention of Kid Devil’s parents beyond that he left them to live with his aunt.  Are they still alive?  Do they know what their son has become?
