Synopsis
Thanks to Raven, Jericho has returned. Bombshell, however, is intent on recapturing him once more for the one who hired her. Jericho can’t leap into her because of her metal coating,. so he leaps into Wonder Girl and knocks Bombshell flying. She lands outside, where Miss Martian has just helped the rest of the Titans to escape from Bombshell’s soldiers. The Titans stick together and defeat Bombshell. Later, the Agents Prince and Nemesis from the Department of Metahuman Affairs arrive to take Bombshell away and reveal that Bombshell had been hired by someone to kidnap Jericho. They just don’t know who. In San Francisco, Rose And Joey Wilson walk along the beach and get to know each other. In New York, their father Slade Wilson (aka Deathstroke) watches them. He wants them back and knows just how to do it.

Sometimes it is difficult to read a comic book because of the art and this was one of those times. Not because it was bad, per se, but because it was so damn inconsistent. With two people doing pencils and five, count ‘em, five to do the pencils, the art is all over the map. As a result, it is difficult sometimes to pay attention to the script because you are looking at one of the characters, thinking, she look older than a couple of pages ago (or he looks beefier or the hair looks different). Plus, the art seems to get worse as the story progresses.
As for the story, I suppose if one must bring back Jericho, this is the way to go. I am guessing Johns had the death and return of Jericho planned from the beginning. After removing Jericho, Johns then set up Rose with Deathstroke before she turning on her father to become a Titan and reunite Rose and Joey as siblings and friends in time to battle their father once more. Johns’ ability to tell these long term stories has always been his greatest asset and I don’t think he is done at all.
There were other things to like in this issue, especially the big fight scene and the way the Titans worked together to defeat Bombshell. Jericho’s narration was also a nice touch in that we get to see the team from an outsider’s perspective (although I thought he knew Wonder Girl?) Diana’s cameo was also nice. However, I really wish Johns would drop the Superboy angle with Robin and Wonder Girl.
One other aspect of this issue that felt out of place was Kid Devil, not so much the character, but the strange allusions to who he is as a character (the thing about a kid, Raven’s attitude, Miss Martian’s comment, etc). I realize that Johns is planting the seeds for the next issue that examines the truth about Kid Devil. These seeds, however, felt forced, like Johns shoehorning them into the plot rather than letting them develop naturally.
On the photos at the end, is it supposed to “Kind Crusader” as it is printed or should it be “Kid Crusader,” which makes better sense?
