Synopsis
At Titans Tower, Conner Kent (aka Superboy) is the only one to respond to Nightwing’s call for help. With the use of a crystal given to Superboy by Lex Luthor, the two decide to find the tower that is the cause of the current Crisis. In Smallville, Wonder Girl is losing her powers due to the disappearance of Paradise Island. However, Ares, the God of War, makes Carrie an offer: he will restore her powers if she will call him brother. Meanwhile, on the way to the Antarctic, Superboy and Nightwing stop to rescue the people sinking in a yacht accident. Afterwards, Superboy flies the two of the Antarctic and Alexander Luthor’s tower.
Review
Despite the fact that this issue was essentially filler, providing exposition to explain how characters got from Point A in one issue to Point B in another issue, it was enjoyable. As part of Infinite Crisis, Johns has been making good use of Teen Titans to fill in story gaps that obviously could not be told within the pages of the main mini-series. I would hope that whenever (or if) this story gets published as a trade paperback that some of the Infinite Crisis material gets published or (my preference) when Infinite Crisis is put into the trade paperback, this issue is collected. Although that is my preference, I recognize that reading this issue is not essential to the crisis, but I do think it helps to expand and deepen the emotional core of these characters within the mini-series. Besides, how cool is it that Nightwing had his old costume on again.
For this issue there is some good news and bad news. First, the good news: I like the way the final pages of this issue tied into the Titans of the future storyline. I assume this was probably Johns more than Wolfman, but it brings the past year around full circle; the future is not set in stone. The bad news is the dueling dialogue boxes from Superboy and Nightwing. Loeb used these to great effect in Superman/Batman, but in this issue, it is clunky and ill-fitting. I like the idea; the execution just does not work. -- Review by MRB
