Synopsis
In Florida, Beast Boy visits the Doom Patrol to find out why Rita Farr is still alive. He has had nightmares recently of Rita’s death. Doom Patrol, however, have never met Beast Boy. Suddenly, the Titans pager goes off. In Smallville, Superboy Prime and Conner Kent are fighting each other. Conner is the one who sets off the Titans pager. Current and former Titans arrive top help, along with the JSA and Doom Patrol. In the midst of the battle, Beast Boy experiences a sudden shift in reality and his memories come back: he was the adopted son of Rita Farr. Doom Patrol also remember Beast Boy. Meanwhile, the Flashes grab Superboy and remove him from the fight. In the aftermath of the battle, Conner apologizes for all the damage that occurred.
Review
This issue is essentially divided into three parts: Beast Boy and Doom Patrol, the scenes that flesh out the events in Infinite Crisis, issue #4 and the ending. While it is nice to see the stuff around the events in Infinite Crisis, it doesn’t really add all that much. I am sure some people will be pissed off that this is really just a rehash of IC. Personally, I was not all that bothered by it. And the scenes with Beast Boy are either a way to help eliminate John Byrne’s recent re-launch to get back to the traditional Doom Patrol or are a set-up for future stories featuring Beast Boy reuniting with his first “family.” The best part of the story is the last page, when Conner realizes that the Titans are his family. This brief little moment solidifies not only the entire issue but also Conner’s recent character arc. It is something that is talked about a lot, that Titans are family, but was reinforced in this issue when everyone (and I do mean everyone) answered Conner’s page.
While I found the idea of the blue arrow (the phantom zone!) to be pretty cool, but ultimately its use in this issue was actually anticlimactic. Based on Infinite Crisis, we know that the Flashes were the ones who eventually grabbed Superboy Prime and took him away. So, when Speedy indicated she was going to use the blue arrow, we know that whatever it is, it wasn’t going to work. Johns had spent considerable time building up the arrow and then when it is used, it doesn’t really do anything.-- Review by MRB
