Synopsis
In Burbank, Eddie is fired for being late. About a half hour later, the city is overrun by demons. In San Francisco, Brother Blood, the leader of the Church of Blood, has used the help of Lilith (aka Omen) to get into Titans Tower. After biting Raven to take some of her power, Brother Blood and Lilith go to Los Angeles, taking beast Boy and Raven with them. Just as Brother Blood is about to attack Beast Boy, Raven teleports them to a safe place. There, they call the rest of the Titans: Wonder Girl, Kid Flash, and Speedy. Raven tells them the doorway between life and death is open and they need to find a way to close it. Before anyone can offer an answer, Brother Blood returns, this time with the new Titans West: dead Teen Titans animated back to life.
Review
For this issue, whether one likes it or not may very well depend on how one enjoys the comic within the comic storytelling device that Johns uses. As someone who loves the Watchmen (from which the parallels are obvious), I found the device slightly annoying and a little too “cutesy” for my tastes. Despite that, I can’t complain too much since it was well done and a least somewhat interesting in that the death of Little Cheese connects with the main plot of the Teen Titans). Ultimately, however, it fills like filler as if the story itself was too big for one issue, too small for two issues, so let’s find a way to stretch it out a little bit.
What really intrigued me was the notion of death’s revolving door, first starting with the return of Superman and then Green Arrow, Hal Jordan, and finally Jason Todd. I liked the fact that someone within the DCU realizes that it must be stopped and this revolving door must be closed once and for all. Of course, as comic book readers, we know this will never be the case, but hey at least DC is willing to somewhat address the situation.
