Synopsis

At Pete’s Last Chance Food & Gas in Kansas, Superman and Batman are looking for Pete.  When they find him, he pulls out a kryptonite gun.  The World’s Finest duo disarm and then search the diner to find a lead-lined floor.  Underneath, the floor they find a cavern, protected by more Kryptonite guns.  Superman, wearing his special suit, and Batman head down to investigate.  There, they are attacked by special task force, each with Kryptonite weapons.  As Superman fights them off, Batman is taken into custody, where he learns that Amanda Waller created the team in the event Superman ever turned rogue.  Meanwhile, Superman is able to defeat Waller’s team, forcing Waller to send in her “All-American Boy”:  Doomsday covered in Kryptonite.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.  No, wait, I said that in the last issue, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean...oh, crap, wait a minute, yes I do mean it.  Are they serious?  A special force just to take down Superman, living in an underground bunker, just waiting for that day when Superman goes rogue.  Like Batman hadn’t already figured out what to do and would’ve done it before Waller could get her team together.  Speaking of which, what exactly does this team do while they wait for Superman to turn evil.  I just get this picture in my head of the four of them playing bridge and sipping tea while they discuss different ways they will tear Superman apart.  But that may just be me.

I wonder what Waller thinks of the Metropolis Squad K or whatever they are called when they appeared in this issue.  I know what I think:  doesn’t anyone in editorial keep track of these things?  Someone should have stepped in an said, you know what, we’ve got these two ideas that are basically the same, so maybe one of them needs to be changed or needs to go or we need to find a way to make them work together.  I suppose that is too much to ask.

Finally, follow me on this one.  I appreciate the effort the writers give in an attempt to provide some kind of motivation for why someone would be part of the Last Line, but I’ve got to deduct brownie points for coming up with a lame idea.  Not that it is bad, but it is a cliché and it to have Doomsday appear just a few pages later makes me wonder:  does the guy hate his own teammate.  He should.  After all, Doomsday was part of that fight as well.
