Synopsis
In Gotham City, Killer Croc invades a Lex Luthor building and steals an unidentified object. When he hands over to the one called Schrocken who asked him to get it, Croc gets beat up and then swims for his life. Later, Batman informs Superman the stolen object was Kryptonian. On the west side of Gotham, two men involved with the object discuss their plans before separating. One of them is followed and then killed in an alleyway. In the North Atlantic, Killer Croc’s body is found by fisherman. Batman flies out to the boat and is able to subdue him. Elsewhere, the Schrocken heads for Metropolis. The next morning, an earthquake rocks Metropolis. When Superman goes to investigate, he discovers Kryptonite slowly infecting the entire city.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
When this title first appeared, it was perceived as an event, a larger than life tale of the two biggest heroes of all of the DC properties. It had a top notch writer in Jeph Loeb and the promise that some of the biggest artists would get involved. And for the years that Loeb was the writer, that held true. This title was an event. Lately, however, it seems to have fallen down a notch. We can debate the quality of the title all we want; that is secondary to the fact that I don’t recognize the writer’s name. Again, this is not a comment on his talent or on the quality of this issue. But it signifies that DC does not see this title being as important as it once was.
There really is nothing wrong with this issue. It was a good story, well told with a good mystery, a nice action scene with Croc and Batman, and a decent cliffhanger. But it just doesn’t have that extra ooomph one would expect from this title. There have been strange creatures battling against both Superman and Batman before. There have been threats of Kryptonite against Superman before. These plot elements aren ot new and I don’t sense that Burnett has found a way to make it new or different. Maybe it will build into something, but for the moment it just seems like this title has become just another title and not the something special it used to be.
