Synopsis
After seemingly disintegrating Supergirl with his Omega Beams, Darkseid prepares to leave, but not before taunting Superman first. Angered, Superman fights Darkseid, first on the farm in Smallville, then to Outer Space and finally, via a Boom Tube, to the Source Wall at the edge of the Universe. It is here where Darkseid is left. When Superman returns, the Justice League of America is helping to rebuild the Kent farm. Later, Superman returns to the Fortress Solitude and to the very-much-alive Kara Zor-el. Her “death” had been planned by Superman to fool Darkseid into coming for her. Now, Superman tells her she must choose her own path. She decides to become Supergirl.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
This was actually a very strong finish to the storyline. The fight between Superman and Darkseid was brutal and I loved the way Turner draw the entire fight. You could just sense the strength and power these two had in the punches that were being thrown and you could feel the righteous anger that boiled inside of Superman. The dialogue from Superman during the fight (all the things that Kara would never do) was stilted and clichéd, but I’ll give it a pass because it felt passionate and angry at the same time. I was not so much into the narrative boxes from Batman during the fight and I actually think it distracted from the fight. Reading the issue a second time and ignoring Batman’s thoughts, the fight read much better. I also liked the fact that plan to fool Darkseid came from Superman and not from Batman, showing that the man of steel is smart, as well. And the ending was just as much as you would expect, with Kara choosing to be Supergirl. I liked the fact that she was introduced to the entire DC Universe heroes which in a sense legitimizes her as the one true Supergirl, above a beyond the Linda Danvers and the ill-conceived Cir-el from just a little while ago. In a way she is connected not only to Superman but also to Batman (who found her) and to Wonder Woman (who trained her) and now she is known to anyone who wears a cape.
