Synopsis
On the Colorado/Nebraska Border, Equus has just caused a train wreck in his attempts to attack the Karate Kid. Caught in the wreck is Supergirl. The impact causes her to remember the time she spent with the Legion of Super Heroes in the future. When she regains consciousness, she attacks Equus and with the help of Karate Kid, they are able to defeat him. Afterwards, Supergirl wants to talk to Karate Kid about her time spent with the Legion, but he tells her that they have never met. They realize that perhaps it is because the Karate Kid has not met her in his time yet. In Kansas, Supergirl tells Superman that she is doing the best that she can. Superman knows that she is. He also suggests she spend some time with kids her, such as the Teen Titans.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
This issue was an entirely serviceable way to mark time between the old and the new creative team while also writing a bridge between moments of time in the Countdown series. I suppose that is one way of saying that Bedard managed to write a decent story that was more editorially driven than it was character driven. It’s not bad, but not really that needed.
The entire section with Supergirl remembering her time with the Legion, but Karate Kid and Una being confused because they never knew her, made my head hurt. Part of that, of course, is the whole time travel thing, which is always confusing, but part of that is the way DC seems intent on muddling up the Legion’s past (or future) in the first place. How difficult is it to create one Legion and stick to it? Currently there is a Supergirl And The Legion Of Superheroes featuring the same hero from this title. Yet, there are multiple Legions with different histories and different versions of their history running through the DCU. Just look at the cover with the same character and two different looks. I hope that, at some point, DC settles the Legion mess, but this issue of Supergirl was not the place to introduce that mess.
All right, there was one part that was even worse than the Legion moment. The Karate Kid chopped Equus’ arm in half. Let me get this straight. With his bare hands, the Karate Kid was able to slice straight and fast enough to cut through flesh and bone. Is that possible?
