Synopsis
In Smallville, Supergirl visits the Kents for some comfort and advice after the incident with President’s Plane. In Colorado, Karate Kid and Una continue their quest to locate Buddy Blank and determine why Karate Kid is so sick. To avoid attracting attention, they decide to hop a train. Meanwhile, local authorities receive a tip that the train has been boarded by terrorists. The tip came from Equus, who then derails the train. The Teen Titans learn of the call. Wonder Girl calls Supergirl who is close enough to investigate. When Karate Kid and Una emerge from the wrecked train, they are attacked by the local police. Karate Kid fights back, but is stopped by the arrival of Supergirl, who thinks Karate Kid is the cause of the accident. When Una tells her they are part of the Legion of Super Heroes, it triggers Supergirl’s memory when she was a member of the Legion. She faints. Angered they are no longer fighting, Equus throws the train on Supergirl and then prepares to attack Karate Kid and Una.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
“Well, they do say she’s more powerful than a locomotive. I just wanted to check.”
For a story that comes across as an editorial checklist of things that need to occur in the overall scheme of Countdown, this is actually not quite bad. Bedard manages to keep the issue in line with current events in Supergirl’s life while melding it fairly well into the events occurring in Countdown. The problem for a lot of people, I am sure, is that they won’t know what the hell is going on. Of course, I have the advantage since I do read Countdown, so the continuity of events made perfect sense to me. For those who are not reading Countdown (and apparently that is a lot), some of the plot elements will seemingly come out of left field, especially the appearance of Orr and Equus (who were last seen in the For Tomorrow story three years ago). Karate Kid and Una are less problematic because of Supergirl’s ties to the legion, but the panel showing them being the same but different is confusing as well. I will assume this is part of the reason to include those two in the title, to help explain the differences in the legions that many carp about, but who knows what will happen in the second part of this issue.
