Synopsis

[The events in this issue take place before issue #11]

Captain Boomerang, Jr. and Nightwing discuss whether or not Supergirl would be a good fit as a member of the Outsiders.  Supergirl is at a costume party when suddenly an explosion rocks the building.  Nearby, a dinosaur is wrecking havoc while Terra is attempting to subdue it.  Working together, Supergirl and Terra eventually return the dinosaur back to where it came.  Afterward, Supergirl asks Terra if she wants to go dancing.  Terra tells her no, she doesn’t have the time because she needs to help the world.  Later, Supergirl wonders aloud to Boomer if it is okay to be selfish every so often.  Boomer agrees and they go out to spend the night on the town.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

This issue infuriated me.  Actually, it infuriates me.  How difficult is it to schedule this issue so that it occurs either before issue #11 or after issue #12?  This issue was written and drawn by different people than the usual team, so it’s not like they had to stop their usual work to fit this in.  Yet, for some reason I cannot comprehend, DC decided to force this issue between a two-part storyline.  Does this make sense?  I really hope they fix this for the trade paperback.  Anyway, it is annoying.  Schedule, people.  To compound the problem, this issue is really an extended promotion for the upcoming Terra mini-series.  I did not shell out 3 dollars for a commercial.  Well, actually I did.  I just don’t have to like it.

What I think infuriates me is that there are parts of this issue that is quite good (the entire party, the costumes) but there are parts that are quite bad (dinosaur empath).  And that is the problem.  I like Amanda Conner’s art, especially on the Power Girl arc in JSA Classified.  And I liked the art on this issue as well.  She draws wonderful expressions that lend a lot to the visual storytelling.  Boomer’s look on his face when Supergirl says she met a girl is just priceless.  And “Aquaman” carrying a fishbowl?  And a male “Big Barda”?  Great stuff.  But the plot just fails the great art.  I likedt he writing and the characterization of Supergirl.  Palmiotti and Gray nail Supeergirl’s angst fairly well; the final scene with Boomer was well done.  I just did not like the empath dinosaur or the fact that Terra was involved.  I do not like it when my comics are hijacked.
