Synopsis

Supergirl decides she wants to become part of the Outsiders.  Along with Grace, Supergirl infiltrates a gang of pirates preying on millionaire yachts and cruise ships.  When they join the gang, Supergirl learns they are getting magical powers from a magical fish they have captured.  The fish asks Supergirl to kill, but she can’t do it.  In that moment of hesitation, the gang beats up Grace and the leader uses her claws to shred Supergirl’s chest.  However, the gang is suddenly defeated and Supergirl is saved by the appearance of Power Boy.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

Aaand this was sooo disappointing.  After a fairly good issue last time, I was hoping for something along those lines and instead get this issue, which seems to think Supergirl’s crush on Nightwing and Supergirl swearing are “cool” character bits. I am going on the record and saying that Supergirl’s swearing, even if it is edited with the funky symbols, does not work.  At all.  Is this an attempt to make Supergirl edgy and hip and cool?  If so, it is a stupid decision.

I am also not that fond of the constant forward and backward movement through the plot.  In the case of this issue, I am not all that sure it works.  Why couldn’t this story be told in a linear manner?  What purpose does the shuffling back and forth serve, other than to provide an opening sequence that is meant to shock us (Supergirl swears and shoots someone!).  If that is the case, the story becomes less about the characters and more about what can be done to shock us and that is never good.

I am not a continuity hound, but I am curious when this story would take place within the Outsiders time line.  Katana has her old outfit and long hair, both of which were gone at the end of the One Year Later arc.  That is the one where the world thought they were dead.  From the moment they were reported alive to Katana’s change, I doubt they had time for a small side trip.  Actually, I hazard a guess and say it is an editorial mess up.
