Synopsis

In downtown Metropolis, Superman fights giant toy robots.  Afterwards, Jimmy Olsen decides to investigate the incident and prove he is a capable reporter.  Elsewhere, the creator of the robots replays footage of the event and notices the moment when Jimmy used the signal watch to call for Superman.  Meanwhile, Jimmy is accosted on the street, so he calls for Superman, who is not pleased to be called for such a minor event.  Later, Jimmy tracks down Wilson Schott looking for an interview.  When Jimmy arrives at Schott’s workshop, Schott kidnaps him.  Jimmy tries to use the watch, but Schott stops him.  Then he decides to remove it, with a saw.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

This was a fairly decent Jimmy Olsen comic, which I think is part of the problem I am having with this story so far.  And to be fair to Moore, I don’t think it has to do with the fact that this is a story about Olsen and not Superman; I do think that occasional stories featuring one of Supes’ supporting character is certainly warranted.  The problem here, however, is that this story is coming out during Countdown to Final Crisis in which Jimmy Olsen is a major player and right after Jimmy was featured in the main Superman.  To compound the problems is the fact that all of these stories tend to tread on the same themes, mainly Jimmy trying to prove himself a reporter rather than a photographer.  It just feels like an overload of Jimmy Olsen.  The other part of the problem is that there is nothing here, really, that knocks my socks off to make me forget the over-saturation of Jimmy Olsen.  The story is competently done, the art is great (I love Hester and Parks), but it doesn’t really supply anything more than solid craftsmanship.
