Synopsis

Five years ago... Anthony Gallo and the Kryptonite Rock move to Las Vegas, where Gallo made a fortune and the rock waits patiently to come in contact with the Kryptonian.  In Metropolis, Lex Luthor learns what caused Superman to get sick in mid-flight.  After Superman recuperates at Clark Kent’s apartment, he returns home to Smallville to visit his mother and father.  Meanwhile, Lois Lane interviews Gallo and wants to know who he is:  the one who murdered his family or the one gives generously to charity.  He says both and offers to tell his story.  Later, when Superman arrives at Gallo’s casino, Gallo tells Lois and Superman that he is not Anthony Gallo.  Years ago, his physical being was trapped inside a large meteor from a dying planet.  He traveled to Earth along with a rocket carrying a baby.  He then tells Superman that he can show him his homeworld.  And his family.  Superman agrees.  To do so they leave their physical bodies.  At that moment, Lex Luthor arrives.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

After five issues of this series, I am and have been at a complete loss at what to say about this storyline.  Both Cooke and Sale are terrific artists and writers and they are telling a riveting and compelling story of Superman’s early years.  I like the portrayal of Lois as a competent, strong newspaperwoman, Jimmy and Perry remain their usual shelf, and perhaps most importantly, Lex Luthor is a conniving jerk out to get Superman.  These characters work.  But the whole idea of the Kryptonite presence (or creature or whatever it is supposed to be) is so, well I am not sure what the right word would be, but it doesn’t feel right to include in the Superman mythos.  I am having a difficult time reading this is a Superman story; he is the one character that feels out of place.  It has nothing to do with Cook or Sale’s story, but rather the rock creature.  Is this creature a human-like creature like Kal-el, which makes Superman not the last male Kryptonian.  Or is it some sort of monster from Kryptonian?  Or is it something else altogether?  At least we know understand that the rock isn’t talking, but the creature contained within the rock.  But now I am waiting to find an explanation for what that thing is supposed to be.
