Synopsis
Ten years ago...Anthony Gallo and the Kryptonite Rock move to Metropolis. Now, Superman falls to Earth after being exposed to the Kryptonite Rock. Lex Luthor’s thugs viciously pound on Superman until the Man of Steel is near death. Then Gallo retreats from the Kryptonite Rock and locks it away. Almost instantly, Superman regains his power and strength to defeat the thugs, but he passes out from the wounds. Jimmy Olsen finds Superman and helps him. Elsewhere, Lex Luthor shows Lois Lane footage of Superman’s beating while Gallo receives word that the Daily Planet is out to get them. Meanwhile, Jimmy takes Superman to Clark Kent’s apartment, surprising Clark when he answers the door.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
I never actually got around to reviewing the last issue of this book, mostly because I was torn about the relationship between Superman and Lois as depicted in this book. In my mind, Lois and Superman really didn’t “date” until he had been around for some time. Having them be a couple at a time early in Superman’s career is oddly jarring. Yet I can’t complain too much because Cooke and Sale are doing such a bang up job with this story that the problem with Lois and Superman is my own problem and not the writer’s.
I have to say that both last issue and this issue were brilliant. Both Cooke and Sale are on the top of their game with this and I sincerely hope these two can continue working together beyond this story, even if it isn’t on this book.
My only complaint about this book is the narration coming from the Kryptonite Rock, which makes it seem like the inanimate object has sentient thoughts. Is it alive? Again, I have to create Cooke because even though the narration is weird, I am curious to see where it all leads and what ti all means. Beyond the talking rock, however, this series so far has been fantastic. I was actually wondering how Cooke was going to get around the fact that Superman was being taken to Clark’s apartment. The solution was both a cool moment (and a nod and a wink to those Silver Age stories in which Clark and Supes meet each other) and a WTF moment that has me interested to see what happens next.
