Synopsis
In the Nightshade Dimension, Nightmaster, Nightshade, and Ragman have just arrived to the city of Arcady, the very spot where Nightmaster received his sword. Now it is overrun by the Unbound. The trio save a group of children from the Unbound. The children then take them to their hideout, where they learn how Arcady had become the home to the Unbound. They also learn the goal of the Unbound is to reach Earth. In Arizona, Enchantress attempts to cast a spell that will send Detective Chimp and Zauriel to the Nightshade Dimension. Instead, the spell allows the Unbound to break out of the Nightshade Dimension and into Earth.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
This could be called the exposition issue, as all of the mysteries from the past couple of issues are finally explained to not only the readers, but also the characters. Whatever happened to stories in which the characters figure it out themselves? Well, I guess that is a more general question and nothing specific to this issue. As for this issue, I enjoyed it and I like what Sturges is doing with the book. And it really had nothing to do with the mysteries revealed and more to do with the small character moments, such as DC looking for a date online or Ragman’s bumbling and stumbling act around Nightshade or even Nightmaster recalling his father’s words about the sword. The plot, as it were, is nothing more than a big ‘ol Zombie flick, which isn’t the most exciting idea in the world, but with the cast of characters Sturges has, it works.
Where is Blue Devil? At the very least, it seems like Sturges is putting the band back together, so perhaps he is setting up for the next confrontation with Doctor Gotham. I like the fact that Shadowpact has their own arch-enemy, but at some point the Sun King plot needs to be resolved or addressed or whatever. It doesn’t mean Doctor Gotham should be deposed of, but even Batman catches the Joker every so often.
