Synopsis
At the Black Tower, Ragman escorts Laura Fell out of her prison and to the Oblivion Bar. There, Enchantress has cast a preservation spell to keep Nightmaster alive, after he had been stabbed through the heart by Etrigan. Unfortunately, she can’t keep the spell going forever. Elsewhere in the bar, Blue Devil is approached Vortigar who delivers a special message for His Most Low on Blue Devil’s recent demotion to the rhyming caste. On the outer plains of hell, Etrigan (with the Trident of Lucifer) continues his assault on the capital city of pandemonium, bringing with him a sizable army. At the Oblivion Bar, Blue Devil decides he needs to fight Etrigan. The next day, he asks the patrons of the bar for volunteers to help. Among those who offer are The Midnight Rider, Acheron, and Laura Fell.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
Warning: this is your standard generic positive review of Shadowpact. This was another good issue with all of the usual touches (the humor stemming from Blue Devil’s new servant, the status of the owner of the Oblivion Bar, returning characters) one can expect from Willingham on this book. The only negative to this issue is that Detective Chimp is missing.
One thing I noticed is that Willingham didn’t bother to pick up the start of this issue directly to the ending of the previous issue (why is Ragman at the tower, I though he was fighting Etrigan?). At first it was a little jarring, but after awhile I actually kinda like it. It allows him to get to the meat of the issue without having to worry about the logistics of getting the characters from Point A to Point B.
I liked the re-appearance of Laura Fell and even the brief mention of Johnny Warlock at the end. I really though Laura’s last appearance a couple of issues ago was just a glorified guest spot, not a peek and upcoming full blown appearance (and possible full membership into the team?). It is very possible that Willingham is going somewhere with these two Laura and Johnny.
If there is one thing that I like about Willingham’s work is that he is got a great imagination to come up with interesting characters, even when they appear for a moment or two. He demonstrated that during his run with Robin when all of the villains came out of the woodwork and he does it again with the emergence of two new characters: Acheron and The Midnight Rider (who may not be new; he looks familiar). Even in the brief introduction, these characters look pretty cool and I hope they make it through the battle and appear in future issues.
Why is Zatanna on the cover?
