Synopsis
In Gotham City, Catman and Bane, with help from Ragdoll, interrupt a series planned kidnappings designed to succeed with the disappearance of Batmna. As the trio break-up each attempt, they discuss replacing Batman. Both deny wanting to replace the Dark Knight. After the last kidnapping is thwarted, Nightwing appears to make sure the kidnappers are not killed. Nightwing warns the trio they are now on his radar.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
The premise of this issue is very simple: as Bane and Catman, two characters connected to Batman as villains, unravel a kidnapping plot, they discuss the relative merits of attempting to replace the Dark Knight. It is a fascinating issue with brutal violence, humorous gags, and some great character moments as they go about their business. The conversation between bane and Catman is through provoking as you consider some of their points) especially Bane’s at the end regarding the difference between them an heroes), but it is not so deep as to distract from the comedic elements and Ragdoll’s perversity. Everything, including Scott’s fantastic art, blends together perfectly and beautifully to create a unified whole. The thing about this issue is that you could take the kidnapping plot out of it and it would still be great. I have said before that Simone has a great handle on these characters and all three of them shine here. I loved the discussion on replacing Batman, because you could really tell that for all of their protestations, you can tell the thought had crossed their minds, especially Catman at the end. As for Ragdoll, well Simone always brings the funny with him and that is definitely true here. This is good stuff.
It is labeled a “Battle of the Cowl” tie-in, and I suppose in a way it is, but it mainly works as a one-shot to highlight the other members of the Secret Six. The other three were showcased in the previous one-shot, so it is natural for the other three to be here. I think it is a credit to Simone (or perhaps her editor) to be able to connect Bane and Catman to Batman in addition to putting the spotlight on them.
