Synopsis

After Robin saves a cat stuck in a tree, he takes it back to Wayne Manor.  Alfred informs Tim he will have to take the cat the next day to the shelter.  At school, Tim confronts Zoanne to apologize for not calling her right away and then asks her out on a date.  Later, Robin is taking the cat to the shelter when something knocks him off his bike and the cat runs away.  When eh goes after the cat, he instead finds a large dragon-like monster.  Robin fights the creature, but gets knocked off his ass.  He is then interrupted by Klarion, who is looking for his cat, Teekl.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

I have mixed feelings about this issue.  The good is that I loved the script; Beechen is doing an absolutely terrific job in fleshing out Robin’s character and his life and it shows.  Most of this issue was random moments in Tim’s life, a kind of day in the life type of story.  Unfortunately most of those type of stories are empty since it lacks plot.  Beechen does this type of story better by connecting the cat at the beginning to something bigger that will pay-off in future issues.  The bad is that I did not like the art at all.  This, I think, may just be me.  I found the colors dark and dull and the drawings were sloppy and unfocused which I can describe at best as sloppy lines.  Mind you, I am not an artist by any stretch of means, so feel free to tell me how great Irving is, but I did not like it.  Despite my reservations about the art, I still enjoyed the heck out of this issue as the character moments between Robin and Alfred and Robin and Zoanne as well as Robin and the cat are the highlights.

One final word on the cover.  The blurb states:  “Guest-Starring:  Klarion.”  Okay, fine, except he appears only on one page and that last page happens to be the final page.  In other words, the marketing people blew the cliff hanger.  But they also blew expectations because I was expecting Klarion at some point and I go frustrated the more I read and the more he obviously was not in the issue.  Frankly, the cover blurb should’ve been on the next issue.
