Synopsis
Tim Drake (aka Robin) is in the sewer tunnels underneath Blackgate Prison. Robin had received a message to free David Cain from Blackgate in order to free Cassandra Cain (aka Batgirl). Robin thinks the plan was hatched by Cain to free himself, but Cain insists he had nothing to do with it. Meanwhile, a student at Tim’s high school learns that Tim Drake is supposed to be her tutor. Elsewhere, one of Robin’s snitches is stopped on the street and given a boomerang by an unknown person. The unknown person is looking for Robin. At the site where Robin is supposed to bring David Cain, Robin is attacked by members of the League Assassins, who are now led by Cassandra. She tells Robin that it is time they bring the world some justice by killing those who really deserve it, by starting with David Cain.
Review
I was not surprised, nor shocked at the turn of events revealed in this issue. My Batman freak of a brother-in-law was completely up in arms about Cassandra’s turn to the dark side and I would not be surprised if a lot of fans also feel the same way. To be honest, I am not really sure how I feel. The easy answer is that the Lazarus Pit made her mentally unbalanced, which could be worked to great effect by showing her becoming more and more unstable. The problem I had, however, is that Cassandra’s final speech about doling out justice by killing those who deserve it is really just too close for comfort to Jason Todd and his current ideology. There is already one pseudo-hero running around saying villains need to be killed, do we really need another? I can’t really think of an angle to this story that would make it more interesting. The ending will be when Robin is able to free himself and Cassandra gets away and the status quo is maintained. Unless DC is willing to kill Cassandra, what other answer could there be?
Besides the ending, this was a fairly good issue. I enjoyed Robin’s break-in to Blackgate, but I was disappointed that we did not get to see the break-out. One would assume they returned the same way Robin entered, but with David Cain unconscious, how did Robin get the through the web of laser lights? I know, silly of me to think of such things, but I do. I also noticed that in the flashback, both Batman and Robin had different costumes. That was a neat touch. Batman looked a little strange, however, around the face area.
Wait, I got the answer to the ending. What if she were mentally unbalanced? What if medication makes her better? She pops a few pills (a super hero taking Prozac) and she is back to the Batgirl that we all know and love. -- MRB
