Synopsis
In Blüdhaven, numerous meta-human villains have been let loose on the city. It is up to Robin with the help of Blue Devil and Ragman with the Warlock’s Daughter to apprehend them all before it is too late. Meanwhile, the Veteran and his team fight through villains as well in order to get to Robin and lend him a helping hand.
Review
“Now there’s an idea, fellas! We can take a break so the rest of you can introduce yourself, too!”
The title says it all: too many villains. Part me of me wanted to read this issue as a comedy and there were certainly some funny scenes mocking villains and their nature, but another part of me wanted to read this seriously as Robin and the others had to battle the proverbial gauntlet to clean u[p the city. Unfortunately, neither reading really quite works as the issue falls flat and becomes tediously boring as villain after villain appears and then gets beaten in some fashion. The best part was the battle between Robin and the Curator, probably because to took several pages to play and thus did feel rushed or forced.
I am also mixed on Laura/Darla saving Robin’s life. On the one hand, I like the synergy that she was able to do what Robin was not able to do. On the other hand, if she is performing CPR and he drowned, that means Robin died in this issue (which seems like a blurb that should’ve been on the cover). While Robin did live, it is surprising that such a moment would feel so rushed, barely even getting a mention amongst all of the madness. The entire thing feels like an “Oh, by the way” moment and it really should not have been.
The best part of this issue was the Veteran’s solution to defeating the Wicker Man. Also, the scene with Ragman and Fright Night was funny, although I really thought that Ragman was faking it, but when it turned out to be real, it was just plain weird and didn’t make much sense to me. Much like the entire issue.-- Review by MRB
