Synopsis
[continued from Batgirl #8] The assassination of Leslie Thompkins failed. Tim Drake (aka Red Robin) along with Batgirl, stopped Ra’s al Ghul’s assassins. Now, Ra’s al Ghul orders his assassins to kill Red Robin. Elsewhere, Prudence tells Red Robin he needs to leave Gotham now. At Wayne Manor, Vicki Vale asks to talk to Tim Drake. Alfred doesn’t know where he is. In Downtown Gotham, Ra’s al Ghul confronts “Bruce Wayne” (Tommy Elliott, aka Hush, in disguise). Ra’s needs Elliot to do one thing for him. Ra’s wants everything Bruce Wayne has. Elsewhere, Tam Fox is being watched by an assassin, who is ordered to kill her. Meanwhile, Red Robin prepares to battle Ra’s. As he retrieves weapons, Batgirl notices a bomb. They get out just as it explodes. Just then, a group of assassins appear. Meanwhile, Tam Fax arrives home when she is confronted by Vicki Vale to ask about Tim. Nearby, the assassin has the duo in his sights.

This was there. Basically, Yost is still putting all of the plot points and the characters in place, so this was more Yost setting up the story and the plot rather than actually telling the story he needs to tell. It also doesn’t help that part of the story took place in another comic, forcing Yost to recap what happened there before getting started on his story. Anyway, this was a quick read with a nice conversation between Tim and Stephanie surrounded by a lot of different check-ins to various other characters and what they are doing. It was a good read and easily sets the stage for the upcoming clash between Ra’s and Tim.
I hope Yost explains why Ra’s targeted Leslie, otherwise I am not quite sure he would go after Leslie (or Batgirl or Alfred for that matter), and then decide to target Red Robin. Why not target Red Robin to begin with? What is Ra’s hoping to accomplish by going after Tim’s “family.” To keep him distracted? I suppose, but with only two more parts to the story, I can’t imagine Yost will spend time on a “distraction” rather than concentrate on the story at hand.
There may not be an assassin going after Tam. The one watching Tam trying to gain entrance to Tim’s warehouse is one of the assassins confronting Tim at the end, so it can’t be him watching here. I am not sure who is after Tam. It could be as easy as a photographer helping Vicki with her story or someone hired to make sure she is safe.
It was nice to see some nice continuity with the mention of Zoanne, who was a prominent character for awhile in the Robin book but as been forgotten for awhile now. I wonder if this is just a one-shot deal for Vicki’s investigation or if Yost has plans to bring her back, perhaps create a love triangle with Tam.
Maybe it was just me, but I got a kick out of Ra’s confronting Tommy Elliot. It is one of those rare times when a writer uses continuity to great effect. Ra’s has always had an interesting relationship with both Batman and Bruce Wayne that one would think he would find disdain from Tommy’s deception.
Originally, Alfred and Dick Grayson had set up the Outsiders to watch over Tommy Elliot all the time to make sure he didn’t do anything stupid to ruin the reputation of Bruce Wayne. So, that explains Katana’s appearance. Of course, at this point Katana is in Markovia with the rest of the Outsiders. While you could argue this story takes place before the current Outsiders story, it still doesn’t explain who is watching Tommy right now.
