Synopsis
In San Francisco, Tatsu Yamashiro (aka Katana) visits a magic shop to learn why the souls in her sword are no longer communicating with her. Meanwhile, at Alcatraz Island, a explosion rocks the prison. The prisoners, however, are too busy having sex to make an escape and the guards are too busy having sex to stop the prisoners. Ishmael Gregor (aka Sabbac), the current holder of the seven deadly sins, has unleashed lust on the island. In the Pequod, the Outsiders are coming to help. Sabbac unleashes rage and causes the group to crash. Katana arrives on the scene to help defeat Sabbac, but he unleashes envy on her. Katana slices Shift in pieces claiming they have no right to the name of Outsiders. Both Starfire and Captain Marvel, Jr. attempt to stop Sabbac by using Katana’s sword, but he is too strong. He claims only a warrior can kill him. Donna Troy (aka Wonder Girl, aka Troia) is that warrior as she kills him, letting the deadly sins go free and entrapping Sabbac’s soul in Katana’s sword. Donna then asks the Outsiders to join her to find a war.
Review
A very good read, although I was a little surprised at how difficult it was to kill Sabbac. I realize he was bigger and tougher (and a demon), but some of those blows should have done something. Starfire is pretty strong so you would think she might have been a little bit more effective. However, I really liked the way the seven deadly sins were used against the Outsiders (although I could have done without the lust in the prison). Personally, I would have used sloth against the Outsiders. Imagine your enemy just sitting down to do nothing. You could kill them at your leisure, but, alas, that would not have made a good story.
I am not all that familiar with Katana (except for her brief appearance in Superman/Batman awhile back) but I did know that she was once a member of Batman and the Outsiders. I got a kick out her envy although I will admit it was fairly predictable. I also liked the fact that Winick tied into her current events in the DCU with her questions about her sword and the status of magic. It’s these small little details that matter when trying to see the entire DCU rather than issues that are self-contained.-- MRB
