Synopsis

Team meeting No. 1...Since the Outsiders are without headquarters, Arsenal and Jade give the team wristband communicators to be contacted when the they have an assignment. Team meeting No. 2...Ishmael Gregor (aka Sabbac) is running the rackets in Las Vegas.  Slade Wilson (aka Deathstroke) offers Sabbac the chance to become a true dark lord, providing he joins the Society.  Team Meeting No. 3...The Fearsome Five are down to three and are hiding in Mexico.  Dr. Thaddeus Sivana offers them a chance to free Shimmer’s brother Mammoth from Alcatraz Prison while at the same time get the chance to kill some heroes.  Meanwhile, Arsenal is in the Pequod searching for intel when he learns of The Fearsome Five’s plans.  The Outsiders gather in San Francisco just as Mammoth is freed from jail, with the help of Sabbac.  At that moment, the Rock of Eternity explodes during the battle between Shazam and the Spectre.  The seven deadly sins are freed and find their way to Sabbac, who grows to gigantic size.

Review

Okay, I’ll be a wise ass and mention how far those seven deadly sins flew to land in San Francisco when it exploded on the east coast over Gotham City.  I’ll be even more of a wise ass and suggest that the only reason Captain Marvel Jr. is on the Outsider’s team is because the writer knew he needed a magic user for this particular story line.  Previously I had expressed surprise he would join the team.  Now I know why.  I should’ve seen it before.

Given those two wise ass remarks above, I liked this issue, mostly, I think, because two villains who had appeared early in the Outsiders run are back to create more havoc.  I also like the fact that this ties in to the Infinite Crisis event without too much of an effort (an actually does it twice with the a tie-in to Villains United and Day Of Vengeance).  I guess what I am saying is that this issue neatly maintains its own internal continuity of the title but still manages to integrate to the DCU as a whole.  Some issues attempt to encompass the DCU but somehow forgets its own continuity in the process.

It is nice to see that no one on the team has forgotten or apparently forgiven Arsenal or Jade for the events in previous issues. I am curious to see if this will be played out or if it will slowly die out.  I am probably in the minority, but I really enjoy the bickering.  it somehow makes the team more of a paid super hero team (which, if the original premise still holds, is the truth) and less of idealistic super heroes.  You would never see Superman and Martian Manhunter snipe at each other like that.-- MRB
