Synopsis
On the place they call “Hell Planet,” Martian Manhunter makes a status report to Batman. Nearby, Catwoman watches and listens. One week later, Bane and Deadshot, former members of the Suicide Squad provide food for Lex Luthor’s group. Several others of Lex’s group feel Bane and Deadshot are still reporting back to the Squad, which they deny. Before things come to blows, Lex steps in to settle the manner and maintain peace. Elsewhere, Bolt complains to Joker about the lack of food. Joker could care less. Gorilla Grodd tells Bolt to get his own food. Then, Brain and Monsieur Mallah approach an offer to jointly rule the planet. Grodd takes exception to the idea a monkey could rule with a Gorilla and attacks. In the fight, Grodd wins and kills them both. Joker then appears and is able to push the battered and beaten Gorilla Grodd to his death. Elsewhere, Vandal Savage leads several women to a fabled safe zone, where they will build paradise.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
Again, I still feel that the focus of the series is too great for the story at hand. There are just way too many villains populating this mini-series that the main plot seems to be moving in slow motion. Let’s face it, the opening scene is a repeat of last week’s cliffhanger with the addition of Catwoman and the following scene is pretty much a repeat of last week’s opener, except with different characters. At this rate we might get a glimpse of all of the villains in the DC universe, but it will sacrifice the plot to do it. And it is hard to care for the characters or the situations because there isn’t much of a plot for us to care about them. So you can see how we are going around and around and who the hell knows where we are going to land.
This is the first issue in which Brain and Monsieur Mallah actually appear; normally, I would find it difficult to feel much for the fight or its outcome. Well, except for the fact that reading and looking at a fight between two big simians was freaking fantastic (and who doesn’t love it when a talking gorillas kills a talking monkey with his own lover, a brain in the jar). The battle between Grodd and Mallah is one of those things that truly nerdy comic book readers have probably argued about for ages and now we get the true answer: Grodd would win, although that victory would be brief. The Joker gets the last laugh.
