Synopsis
Black Adam has found the last piece of Isis’ amulet, but finds soldiers waiting for him. Black Adam attacks, refusing to let them take him. However, he is able to escape. Three days later, Adam drifts into Fawcett City. There he stops at an ice cream shop, where he ordered Chocolate Egg Creams. It also happens to be the word that Captain Marvel had chosen. When he becomes Black Adam once more, he flies directly to Tower of Fate. There, Faust attempts to use the amulet to resurrect Isis, but it doesn’t work. Angered, Black Adam flies away from the tower. As soon as he goes, Faust then resurrects Isis and with her leaves the tower. In Gotham City, Black Adam enters the Khandaq Embassy and weeps for his dead wife.

Overall, this was a very satisfying conclusion to the mini-series. Tomasi manages to weave in the ending to 52 and the beginning to Countdown very well while staying true to the characterizations in this mini-series. However, I have issues with the reveal that allowed Faust to leave Fate’s tower. It is not so much that Faust gets to leave; after all, Tomasi had to write something that explained Faust’s departure in order to explain how Faust was able to show up in the first story of the new Justice League of America series. What bothered me is that Isis was resurrected, but Black Adam was not aware. I guess it is meant to be ironic or sad or wahtever. But it just, I don’t know, didn’t quite fit the flow of the rest of the story. This mini-series always seemed to be a tragedy and the way the story ended for Black Adam, unable to resurrect Isis, was the perfect final note. To continue with Dibny’s involvement (which I do not understand) and then Isis walking away with Faust struck a sour note.
“Chocolate Egg Creams?” In an abstract manner, I like the idea that Billy would choose something that would please the child that he really is. In actuality, for someone with the wisdom of the Gods, it is a stupid. A smarter move would’ve been to create a new word rather than use words already available in any language that can be spoken even accidentally. But that is just me. I also thought it would’ve been a single word rather than a phrase.
You would think, that if you are using special bullets, that you would want a sharp shooter firing said bullets so you get the kill shot that you want. However, I do like Black Adam’s use of the seal to make his getaway; that was a nice move.
