Synopsis
Kate Spencer goes to visit her ex-husband, bearing gifts for his new daughter. Just as she gets there, she gets the call: the verdict is in for her case defending Dr. Psycho. At the courthouse, just seconds before the verdict is read, the inhibitors controlling Dr. Psycho are removed, allowing Dr. Psycho to take control of the court. Meanwhile, Mark leaves the apartment he shares with Dylan. Later, Cameron Chase visits the morgue where she learns serial killer Sweeny Todd is targeting women with the metagene. Back in court, Dr. Psycho has control of the entire court. He then learns that Kate is also Manhunter. He opens he briefcase to reveal the outfit. He forces her to put it on and the forces her to kiss. She bites his tongue in the moment of distraction, grabs her weapon. Just as the DEO busts into the courtroom, she plunges the weapon into Dr. Psycho’s head and then snaps it off. In the process, his powers are completely nullified. Elsewhere, the Secret Society watches and one speculates Manhunter would be a great addition to their group. Later, Bones tells Manhunter she did good and now every super villain in the system will want her to represent them.

This issue completely rocked the house. I loved it. It began with a small scene with Kate realizing that she was an outsider to a family which includes her son and ends with the doozy of a bombshell that Kate may be defending other villains. It is this ability to brilliantly and successfully juggle the life of Kate Spencer and the life of Manhunter and the life of the lawyer that makes this series such a great read. Compare Manhunter to Batman and Superman. There is always talk of making sure that Superman and Clark Kent or batman and Bruce Wayne get equal footing in their books, but more often than not it is the heroes that take center stage while the alter egos fall back. For Manhunter, this balance is struck right and more importantly it does not get forgotten. And to top it off, there is always something new, something completely different on the horizon that continues to keep me intrigued to read what happens next. And this month’s cliffhanger is no exception. Hopefully, and I do have faith, this book will not become the villain of the month for Kate to defend. Well, actually I wouldn’t mind that at all since it would mean the series has not been canceled. Next issue was supposed to be the end, but DC has given it a reprieve for five more issues, so #30 is supposed to be the end. I want #31!
Color me curious: who the hell is the special musical guest? Could it be a cast member from the musical Sweeny Todd (if it was a musical)? Thinking about it, that would be neat.
Buy Manhunter.
