Synopsis

Still performing tests on Power Girl, Dr. Mid-Nite suggests they investigate the ship in which she crash landed.  Mr. Terrific and Jay Garrick go to STAR Labs to get it, but are stopped by Checkmate Agents.  With the ship is Director Bones and his team finds a ring.  On top of the Daily Planet, Power Girl is waiting for Superman to come by, but instead Jimmy Olsen visits.  Suddenly, members of the 31st century Legion of Super Heroes appear to take Power Girl home.  they tell her that her real name is Andromeda and she was sent to the past to stop Mordru and now that her mission is finished she is to come home.  Just then a plane out of control with engine damage goes whizzing by.  Power Girl flies to help, but the legion tries to stop her to get her to come back with them.  Power Girl breaks free of their grasp, but Superman and Supergirl save the plane.  Superman asks what is the matter; she tells him of the Legion, but Superman tells her no one saw anything.  She returns to the Daily Planet, but they are gone, including Jimmy.  Superman tells her Jimmy Olsen is in Washington, DC.  Superman offers to help her, but she tells him she must do it on her own.  Elsewhere, Jimmy Olsen and the Legion of Super Heroes are dismissed by Psycho Pirate who says eventually Power Girl will be as crazy as he is and all will be right with the world.

Review

Right after they save the plane, Superman tells Power Girl she was alone and then he asks her if she has been drinking. Uh, what?  Is there something I’m missing?  Was Power Girl a drunk at anytime in her history?  And if she wasn’t, this strikes me as a very odd thing for Superman to suggest.  He is not the type of person to blatantly suggest something, unless of course his super smelling catches a whiff of alcohol on her breath.  However, I really like the look on PG’s face.  I think the same look might’ve crossed my face when I read it.  And it stuck with me, too.  When I sat down to read this issue a second time, I remembered that line.  It is just so very odd to me.  And strange for Geoff Johns, who is a good writer.  I mean the whole thing explaining why she had a hole in her outfit was brilliant as was the scene with Jimmy Olsen in which PG is waiting for Jimmy to eventually look away from her eyes and downward.  I mentioned before that I liked that she was aware of her physical traits and its affect on men (and women) and that short scene worked well.

I also noticed that she developed x-ray vision momentarily to see inside the plane, but couldn’t when she wanted to use it to find “Jimmy.”  This whole thing with her Superman-like powers coming and going is important, but for the life of me I can’t figure it out.  I mean, she was supposed to be Superman’s cousin, but the Crisis wiped that away.  Yet, she still shows signs of those powers.  And the addition of Pyscho Pirate (the only person who remembers the multiverse) would suggest that perhaps her Earth-2 origins will come into play at some point.  And I have faith in Geoff Johns.  He did such a whiz-bang job with Hal Jordan and Hawkman that this man could fix anyone’s history and not give you a splitting migraine.

I also found it interesting they decided to include Checkmate agents.  Based on OMAC project, it seemed as if everyone knew about Checkmate, but did not realize they were operating.  Yet, here it is taken for granted.  I will make a leap of faith and suggest that based on OMAC, Checkmate’s presence has increased. -- MRB
