Synopsis

Max Lord has created OMAC Prime to kill Wonder Woman.  In Los Angeles, OMAC Prime is battle her, along with the new Justice League International.  One of the powers of OMAC Prime is to gain the powers of those he is fighting.  As the fight goes on, OMAC Prime is getting stronger.  In the sky, Booster Gold is fighting Max Lord, who turns off Booster’s power suit to make the battle even.  Meanwhile, Captain Atom and Power Girl have joined the others in the fight.  OMAC Prime quickly gains Atom’s powers.  However, Atom takes it right back and then flies into space where the explosion will harm no one.  In the sky, Booster and Max continue to fight, with neither gaining the upper hand, until Booster tackles Max and literally jumps off the ship so that they fall down to Earth.  On the ground, Blue Beetle has a plan.  He confronts OMAC Prime and allows himself to get close enough for OMAC Prime to take his powers.  OMAC Prime has the alien technology running through him. And Blue Beetle controls that technology, allowing him to destroy OMAC Prime.  Meanwhile, Max restores Booster’s power to the suit, which saves them.  But it gives Max time to power up and once more attempt to control Bosoter.  Just then Atom grabs Max.  Still infused with the power stole from OMAC Prime, Atom is close to jumping into the time stream.  And Max goes with him, unless Max makes the world remember him.  Max complies.  Two weeks later…the world remembers Max Lord, but as a good guy and the head of Checkmate, not the murderer the JLI knows is the truth.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

I really, really enjoyed this issue.  The only down part about it is that this issue was essentially one long fight scene and while in worked to resolve the series, it felt like a cheat.  This series has been about the characters, the ragtag bunch of heroes staring in the storm and willingly going inside the storm because they knew it was right.  But rather than ending the series celebrating that, Winick ends it with a giant slobberknocker.  Granted, it was a fun fight and I liked Atom’s moment when the reclaims his powers and the solution to defeating OMAC Prime was ingenious and made sense.  But it still didn’t feel like this book, which was not about the fighting, but about the characterization and the interaction of the characters.

Having said that, I did, however, enjoy the battle between Booster and Max.  To me, at least, the fight was an outgrowth of the characterization and the story.  I think that fight works because it was a fight characterized by who they are, by the arrogance and intelligence of Max Lord and the plucky spirit (and stupidity when he uses his suit to land on the ground) of Booster Gold.

I also like the fact that Maxwell Lord was the “winner” at the end.  It would make sense that Lord would agree to make everyone remember him, but make everyone remember someone completely different.  So, he emerges as a good guy, the winner it in all.  Actually, everyone pretty much won as the new JLI saved the day and saved Wonder Woman and gained some respected for what they had, even if it was just from Batman.
