Synopsis

Eclipso has just torn the moon literally in half.  On Earth, the heroes deal with the repercussion.  On the moon, Batman leads the remaining Justice League on an assault against Eclipso.  Five minutes earlier…Batman reveals his plan of attack.  The Key is the shade.  Batman devises a way to get the Atom, along with Starman, into the brain of the Shade, by having Congorilla fire a gun created by Blue Lantern Saint Walker into the Shade’s skull.  In order to get a good shot, Obsidian will draw Shade out into the open.  Meanwhile, the rest of the team will focus on freeing Zauriel, which will be a decoy to allow Donna Troy the opportunity to get close to attack Eclipso.  The plan works perfectly.  Donna is in perfect position and nails Eclipso on the chin.  However, he fights back, his sword slicing her magic lasso, then piercing her right through the chest.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

You know, this is one of those odd situations where it might be possible, just possible, that Donna Troy is really dead.  Normally I would say that the final image is not what we think, but at this moment, I am not sure.  I say that because with the decision by DC to relaunch the entire line (and with only two more issues of this title remaining), I can imagine that Donna could be a causality to not make to the relaunch.  He character is such an odd one, the former Wonder Girl who died and came back to life, that I can see DC dropping her.  And what better way to do it than to kill her (again).

As for the issue itself, I actually enjoyed this one.  I liked the way Robinson slowly doles out Batman’s plan, creating the narrative so that the feints and mis-directions happened to us in the same way that it happened to the characters themselves.  I also liked the plan and thought that it made sense and made great use of the different characters and their abilities, especially Saint Walker and Congorilla.  Granted, this issue was primarily just dealing with the set-up to the finale, so much of the plan was only partially executed.  We’ll have to wait and see if it actually works.

What the hell was the purpose of the first page?  What does it have to do with the rest of the story?  And where the hell is Talok VIII?

The splash page at the beginning shows (clockwise) Knight and Squire in England (upper left), Red Star in Russia (upper right), Wonder and Superboy in San Francisco (lower right) and Captain Atom (I think based on symbol near the water) in some unknown location.  In the center is the Guardian, presumably in Metropolis.
