For as much as I admire McDuffie for his ability to handle the Milestone characters and introduce who they are and what abilities they have without sacrificing characterization of the Justice League, I am annoyed with this issue. It is an extended fight scene. Worse, it is an extended fight designed to introduce the Milestone characters. McDuffie does provide some sort of excuse for the fight within the plot, but it feels flimsy, as if McDuffie knew what he was doing so he felt obligated to find a new twist to the good guys fighting good guys cliché. Sadly, what he comes up with isn’t new, nor all that interesting. I don’t know. I guess my lack of familiarity with the Milestone characters hurts my enjoyment of this story. To me, the Shadow Cabinet are random, new characters and I could care less who they are or why they should matter to me. What I want is more of the Justice League not a new group of characters fighting the Justice League.
Let’s see: the Shadow Thief is trying to destroy the world and the Shadow Cabinet are trying to claim both Dr. Lights. I sense a pattern. The only question: is Hawkman part of Icon’s plan or is his appearance unexpected?
In the last issue there was a great scene with Black Canary attempting to reclaim her position as the leader of the Justice League from the Trinity. I liked how that scene played out. In this issue, what do you think happens? With most of the Justice League standing behind Black Canary, it is Superman who attempts to negotiate with the Shadow Cabinet. It is like that conversation in the previous issue never happened.
I love the final page with the names of Hawkman and Shadow Thief in specialized, larger font than the rest of what is being said. I don’t know, but I always chuckle when I see people speaking with “logos”.
