Synopsis

[Continued from Justice League Wedding Special]

Batman, Wonder Woman, and Red Arrow have been captured by the Injustice League led by The Joker and Lex Luthor.  At the Hall of Justice, the Justice League split into two teams, with Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Red Tornado heading out to find Wonder Woman in Greenwich Village.  There they are attacked and defeated by the Injustice League.  Meanwhile, Superman, Vixen, and Black Canary head out to find Batman and Red Arrow when they are attacked by the Injustice League as well.  This time, however, Black Lightning helps out to help them.  He tells them the others have been captured.  Superman wonders what next.  Lex Luthor is glad he asked...

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

While there was nothing really fantastic about this issue, there wasn’t really that awful about it either.  Benitez’ art was serviceable (except for the first page; Batman looks awful) and McDuffie’s script delivered exactly what it should’ve:  a bunch of action as heroes and villains battle each other.  Credit, however, to McDuffie for making sure to include character moments into a storyline that was designed strictly for a lot of action.  The quiet moment between Superman and Vixen was handled well, not only in terms of the characters involved (loved Superman’s support and encouragement for her) but the way McDuffie picks up this thread from Meltzer’s run.  However, Black Canary’s outcry about Sue Dibny falls flat; not only are the events from Identity Crisis some time ago (at least a year or more in the time of the DCU), but I am sure she must’ve seen him sometime before this to air her grievances.  And as much as I liked the discussion between Green Lantern and Black Lightning about their respective hair-dos (and I liked it because it really pinpointed their characters fairly well), it seemed out of place in terms of the when it was happening.  Finally, it rankled me a little bit the way Black Lightning seemingly took charge of the meeting; shouldn’t Black Canary, as the chairperson, be the one in charge?  So, overall, there are some good points in this issue, but it still is not as fantastic as it should be.

In the scene where the league is discussing the case, I love how Benitez has the characters refer to the missing as “Roy” and “Batman”.  Not Roy and Bruce or Red Arrow and Batman, but Roy and Batman.  There is also a reference to “Wonder Woman” and “Kendra” in the same sentence as well as a sentence that refers to “John”, “Black Lightning” and “Tornado” (what happened to “Reddy”?).  I don’t mind the use of first names, especially when the team is alone, but it is weird when real names and hero names are randomly used within the same sentence.
