Synopsis

When the local police come for Billy to arrest him as the Bogeyman, Lucia and Erik/Erika decide to intervene to save the boy.  Dr. Fogel, however, is able to stop them and capture Billy and put him in the local jail.  Later, Infinity Inc. tells Billy’s mom they will do what they can, although Mercy feels they shouldn’t interfere with the police.  However, Erik/Erika breaks him out of jail.  Elsewhere, a bunch of kids are scared by the Bogeyman.  Infinity Inc. rushes to investigate.  They find Billy, but they also find the Bogeyman.  Billy reveals the creature is his mother.  However, a local townsperson arrives and shoots her, killing Billy’s mom.  Later, Mercy decides to leave the team.  Two weeks later, Steel and Superman find the body of a member of the Everyman Project in the snow, with the top of its head chopped off.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

I don’t think I have ever been in position to review a recently canceled book in which I was not that enamored with.  I have reviewed about-to-be canceled titles before, but for the most part, they have been titles that I have liked.  It is tough to read a book knowing it will be gone.  Unless, of course, you don’t really care if it will be gone or not.  And that is where I come to this book.  In a sense it is tough to get emotionally invested in the book.  I don’t think I will miss it when it disappears.  So, the little character tidbits like Gerome’s glasses, the mystery of Dr. Fogel, or Mercy leaving don’t have an impact on me.  Sure at some point I suspect these plots will be resolved in the next two issues, but frankly I don’t really care.  Sad to say, but true.

The one thing I did notice is that there seemed to be moments of the plot that are skipped over or occur off panel, which makes for choppy reading.  For instance, we see Fogel tell the cops to arrest Billy, but we don’t see it.  Hell, we see Lucia “cut” Fogel, but the rest of the team doesn’t follow through on it.  It is almost as if they gave up after Nat went down.  It also seems a little convenient the way both Infinity Inc. and the shooter found the Bogeyman so quickly.

Wasn’t it my review of the last issue in which I thought Mercy was the most interesting character of the group, which was at odds with the concept of the book since she was not part of the Everyman Project?  And now in this issue she leaves the team.  Her departure seems rather abrupt, almost as if someone (editorial) forced her to leave the book or the character will appear later down the road, either as a conflicted agent of Lex Luthor or the reluctant hero out to save the team.

Metempsychosis is a philosophical term related to reincarnation, popular among Eastern religions.
