Synopsis
When Erik somehow turns into Erika, she storms away. Gerome follows, leaving Natasha alone with Kitty, who had just tried to attack them. Suddenly, Kid Empty appears and attacks Natasha, but she is able to fend him and Kitty off until Gerome and Erika return to help her. Kid Empty and Kitty then run away. Meanwhile, former Lex Luthor bodyguard Mercy comes to visit John Henry Irons to let him know she is willing to help him find evidence against Luthor. Later, Erika and Natasha are out shopping when Lars, a shapeshifter in the form of John Henry Irons visits Gerome. Just as Lars kills Gerome, Natasha and Erika walk in, followed by Gerome’s doppleganger. Lars runs away. Nearby, Kid Empty watches Lars as he runs and wonders what a shapeshifter would taste like...
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
I’ve got to admit that while I find the whole psychoanalysis thing relating to their powers a little bit of cliché, I am starting to get into the story a little bit more than previously. Part of that has to do with the fact that Milligan is finally into the meat of the plot, so some of the earlier scenes (and even last issue’s backup story) are now starting to make some sense. What undermines this story to this point is the fact that we seem to be spinning our wheels, which really became apparent when Kid Empty fled after his attack on Natasha. This is a recurring situation in which Kid Empty sets himself up for the attack, does so, and then flees when Natasha et al. get anywhere close. At this point we get that he is the villain and will need to be defeated; we don’t need more attacks. I am also wondering what Milligan is trying to establish with Kitty. As I stated, we know Kid Empty is the bad guy. Beating up his girlfriend after not performing sexually seems like overkill. Is Milligan setting up Kitty to betray him? If so, it is awfully clumsy. If not, where is it leading?
We also get another repeat scene as John Henry goes digging for more information on Luthor. First it was Hope and now it is Mercy but in each case, John Henry really doesn’t get anything out of them. At first, seeing these characters was a nice touch to continuity but if you are going to use them again, it better lead to something other than what we saw here.

Review
I like the way this back-up story neatly dovetailed into the main story. I am not quite sure why it just wasn’t made part of the main story in the first place (although I suspect it may have to do with the artist ability to churn out so many pages per month), but at least it works within the narrative and won’t seem too out of place when the story is collected in the trade paperback.
