Synopsis

While Gerome McKenna talks to his psychiatrist, Dale Smith (aka Kid Empty) attacks John Henry Irons and tries to drain his life.  Suddenly, Johns niece appears out of thin air to attack Dale, who then runs away.  They then go check on Sally Dwyer, who had just been attacked Dale Smith.  When Nat goes to check on her, John collapses.  In the hospital, the doctors say he is going to be fine.  John, however, is more interested to know where Nat had gone.  Later, John Henry Irons is tracking down an intruder in the Steelworks as Nat moves in with Gerome and Erik Storm.  They are debating what to do about Kid Empty when they notice the street littered with underpants.  They follow the trail of underpants to Kitty, someone who knows Kid Empty.  She then attacks, trying to duplicate them, but not quite succeeding until Erik turns into a woman, knocks out Kitty, and reverts to himself.  He then runs away.  Gerome follows, leaving Nat alone with Kid Empty.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

Color me confused.  That is a bad sign.  After three issues, I should not be confused.  Actually, I don’t think it is so much confusion in terms of the plot or the story, but confusion on trying to figure out exactly what Milligan is trying to accomplish.  There are a lot of strange things happening, but so far they seem to be happening randomly without rhyme and reason.  And with repetition.  We get John Henry chasing ghosts again.  We get one of the old team members exhibiting strange powers.  We get Kid Empty draining the life force of someone at the end of the issue.  Again.  At some point, the plot needs to move forward.  I know that when this story reaches the end we’ll learn why Gerome had a Doppelganger or why Nat disappeared or why Erik suddenly turned into Erika.  Where I get confused is the way these scenes are randomly and repetitively inserted into the story to the point where we are treading water, waiting for the sixth issue to complete the trade paperback.

The entire sequence with Kitty and the duplicating underpants scenario followed by Kitty trying to duplicate the heroes also confused me.  Was she trying to kill them? Did she know she was going to kill them?  Was this for Kid Empty?  Did she know he was there?  They obviously know each other.   Did Kitty appear earlier in the story and I just missed it?

Synopsis

At the apartment of Natasha, Gerome, and Erik, one of their neighbors stops by for a visit.  When the women leaves, it is revealed that she was actually Lars, a shapeshifter trying to learn more about the former members of Luthor’s superhero team.  He wants to know why they are together again.  He thinks they might have their powers again.  And maybe they will need a replacement.  Later, he returns to the apartment under the guise of John Henry Irons.

Review

I don’t quite understand where this story fits into the main story.  Is this happening at the same time, as suggested since we get a repeat of Nat moving in with the boys?  If not, it seems a little odd to have a back-up story when the first story (which will set up the status quo) is not even finished.  When Lars mentions the team is back together, is this is a sign of the ending to the first story or just a misconception, which would be my guess.
