Synopsis

Kendra Saunders (aka Hawkgirl) is locked inside a sarcophagus inside a shipping container on a boat setting sail for Egypt.  Hath-Set has captured Kendra and is taking her back home.  On the ship, one of the crew members decides to check out the sarcophagus, providing Kendra with the means to escape.  In Egypt, before the sarcophagus can be opened, Carter Hall (aka Hawkman) attacks Hath-Set and his gang of mummies.  However, in the midst of battle, Carter falls into a deep pit, along with a number of mummies.  An iron gate on the opening prevents him from flying out.  Hath-Set then opens the sarcophagus.  Kendra is not there.  She attacks Hath-Set and the two battle each others as Carter fights for his life against the mummies.

I must admit that I am ready and willing to give Simonson some props because the last couple of issues have been getting better and better, but there is a moment in this issue that completely loses any good feelings I might have had for this book.  That moment is the scene where the crew members decides he is going to visit Kendra and, well not to be crass or crude, but rape her.  It is not stated outright, but the implication is very strongly there that one could not miss it.  Hell, the character even makes a joke about it.  It boggles the mind that Simonson could even think this was okay to put in there, even for a villain.  Rape is not okay in any shape or form and even to imply it or suggest that a character would consider it is irresponsible and stupid.  This becomes even more glaring when you realize this moment is an isolated moment.  It’s not like this the main villain or part of villainous acts that Hawkgirl is trying to stop.  Hell, the character wants to do it because he is bored.  I mean, my God, this is wrong, just wrong; rape is a violent act, not the act of someone who is bored.  And to portray a rapist as a plot device to free Kendra from sarcophagus is stupid and I cannot and did not let it pass without commenting on it and chastising the book, the editor, the writer, and DC Comics.
