Review by Binkley (e-mail)
I find that I don’t really have that much to say about this issue, it really is not that bad, but by the same token it is not really that great. This issue, like the storyline, is perfectly serviceable story and I am sure we’ll get a decent resolution, possibly with the Furies and Hawkgirl working together to save Earth. As I said, it’s very serviceable. Sadly, Simonson has not done much to make me care about Hawkgirl in any fashion. Some of that I think can be tied to the absence of Hawkman and not being able to do much to the character while he is absent from the DCU. But a large part of that has to do with the writing that pushes Hawkgirl into the background. A good example is that is this issue and the last issue, both of which contained extended sequences to show the history of the Gizmoid. Were those pages necessary? Hawkgirl does not appear in this book for the first 7 pages and those pages don’t really do much except tell us the Gizmoid is a planet killer, a bit of information that might’ve worked best as the cliffhanger, not a throwaway line on the second page. Ultimately, we get very little about Hawkgirl. And even though those two pages with Danny were nice to read, to me, it is not enough. I want to know more about her, not the Female Furies or the Gizmoid.
With regards to the ending of this issue, I don’t think the Gizmoid takes over Kendra’s body so much as replicates her body in order to accomplish whatever it needs to do. Kendra appears on the bottom of page 21, lying next to the unconscious bodies of the Female Furies. So, what we have is a robot version of Hawkgirl. I don’t know why, but I find that amusing to a small degree.
