Synopsis

[Continued from JSA Classified, #22]

In ancient Egypt, Hath-Set captures a demon, who offers a weapon from Apokolips in exchange for his life.  Despite the offer, Hath-set kills the demon and the places the weapon in a jar for safe-keeping.  Now...a young girl enters the St. Roch museum searching for the jar.  While searching, Danny Evans notices her and sets off the alarm.  However, she finds the jar and runs outside with it.  Meanwhile, Hawkgirl is visited by the sprit of Shiera, who says death is nearby and the pattern must be broken.  Elsewhere, Hawkman flies after the girl, who is run over by a police car racing to answer the alarm.  The girl dies, but the weapon is missing.  Later, Kendra tells Carter that their romantic relationship is over.  Outside the museum, the weapon transforms into a robotic spider and crawls its way to the building.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

I’ve got one little problem with this issue:  why go to all of the trouble to getting Kendra and Carter to fall in love, consummate that love, and then tear them apart?  Don’t get me wrong, I actually like the fact that Carter loved her, but stayed away from her because he feared for her life.  Meanwhile, Kendra swooned over him, but couldn’t understand why he remained distant.  Now, it seems as if the roles are reversed, with Kendra purposelessly staying away while Carter swoons over her.  Wait...did I just answer my own question.  Okay, thinking about it in that light, I think I understand where Simonson is heading with all of this, if this is where he is heading with all of this.  I guess at the moment, we will have to wait and see.

As for the rest of this issue, at first I was annoyed with the opening sequence which seemed an awfully long introduction just to say something odd was in the jar.  And it was even odder to That is, until I realized that the weapon from Apokolips looks remarkably like the item at the bottom center of this picture right here.  If correct, this revelation goes a long way (okay maybe just a little way, but still, it helps) to explaining some of the upcoming events.  The DCU has been or certainly will be overrun with more New Gods, first in the most recent issue of Blue Beetle and in upcoming issues of Firestorm.  For that reason, I am intrigued to see how this plays out in this book and what it will mean for the hawks.
