Synopsis

Kendra Saunders (aka Hawkgirl) is flying above St. Roch in the early dawn when she notices a car speeding down the street.  She gets closer and recognizes Lieutenants Grubs and Doucette.  She decides to follow.  The two cops are looking for a gang based on a reliable tip.  Meanwhile, Khimaera races across the city, killing a homeless man before she meets a gang of bald men with similar tattoos.  They have Boscovitch hostage.  Khimaera attempts to kill him to drain his life force, but he has a hear attack.  Annoyed, she tears off the head of one of the gang members.  Grubs and Doucette open fire on Khimaera and the gang, who shot back.  Khimaera attacks Grubs.  Hawkgirl comes to the rescue and is able to defeat Khimaera.  However, she is too late to save Grubs and he dies.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

I have a tough time believing the villain is a true threat to Hawkgirl or even is simply an evil person when I find myself chuckling at how idiotic the thing looks. Gold plated bra and panties that don’t even have any straps to hold them up?  And what is the deal with the tattoos?  I’m sorry, but Khimaera was completely useless as a character.  And it did not help that Hawkgirl defeated her just by sending her wings out to catch her and then drop her.  This is the villain.  Ooooh, I’m scared.  Okay, I’m sorry, I won’t do that again.

After I finished reading, I really had no reaction to the death of Lt. Grubs (although I did like his remark about his knowledge of Hawkgirl’s secret identity).   No, I take it back.   I did have one reaction:  how will this character come back to life?  Not in a Jason Todd, Oliver Queen kinda way, but in a zombie kinda way.  You know, a supernatural creature that will be determined to kill Hawkgirl, even though the little bit of human remaining does not want to.  To me the death of Lt. Grubs meant nothing, but the issue played it as meaning something, which usually is a sign that there is more.  We’ll see.

The brief bit of narration regarding the former financial wheel who landed on hard times reminded me of a similar type of writing usually employed by Judd Winick.  Maybe Simonson has been reading the Outsiders or Green Arrow?
