Synopsis
On Thanagar, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, along with Captain Comet, Fel Andar, and Cha’l Andar are fighting the forces currently being led by Komand’r (aka Blackfire). As they try to convince her there is a bigger crisis than the war, Fel Ander pleads for peace. Blackfire kills Fel Andar. The battle once more resumes. Adam Strange leaves to go get help and returns with Green Lanterns Kilowog and Kyle Rayner. Later, Carter and Kendra enjoy a quiet romantic dinner that is momentarily upset by an attack from Durlan Bio-Ships. The duo subdue the ships, but only have a few moments before the final conflict. They spend that time in bed.
Review by Binkley (e-mail)
“We need to keep that balance between romance and tragedy. Right now, tragedy is up by a touchdown.”
This issue was a lot of noise with not much actually happening, a typical occurrence in a lot of the issues leading up the One Year Later shift in two months. I guess it has to be hard for any writer to come up material that can’t impinge on the Infinite Crisis mini-series and can’t accomplish anything significant because of the upcoming changes. Or, and I think this may be the case for this book, changes are forced upon the writer in order to lead into the change to a year later. No matter the reason, this issue is very lackluster.
While it was nice to finally see Carter and Kendra succumb to destiny and get some nookie, it was a little disappointing in the way it happened. Maybe it is just me, but the writing seemed to suggest that Kendra’s desire was born less out of her love for Carter and more out of her need for plain old sex. There was nothing romantic at all about what happened and nothing in the last several issues to suggest that had grown closer to each other. If anything, Kendra was pissed off at Carter for not including her in his elaborate plan to identify his own murderer.
Is it just me or does Kyle look goofy with that grin Batista drew on him. It doesn’t look real. It looks as if he is grimacing.
