Synopsis

In St. Roch, Charley Parker, dressed as Hawkman, and Hawkgirl are rounding up the last of Satana’s manimal army, hoping the pair will be spotted by the person behind the killing of Hawkman.  Meanwhile, The Fadeaway Man, Lasso, and Hummingbird are visited and captured by an unknown person looking for revenge.  At the Lure in St. Roch, “Hawkman” and Hawkgirl attack Satana and her army, but Satana gets away.  Hawkgirl, however, realizes that Satana is not the mastermind behind the killing of Hawkman.  At Ethon headquarters, Charley shows Hawkgirl his Thanagarian spaceship that he has been working.  He then tries to kiss her.  When she resists, Charley punches her in the mouth.  He prepares to cut with his knife when someone tells Charley to turn around.  It’s Hawkman.

Review by Binkley (e-mail)

As anyone who has read any of these reviews in the Golden Eagle saga knows, I predicted that the mastermind behind the attacks would indeed be Charley Parker.  Seeing that revelation in this issue was partly a let down and not simply because I was correct, although that certainly plays into it.  No, my disappointment is that we are not given the reasons for Charley’s actions.  In a sense it means then ext issue, the final issue in this year-long saga, will be half-filled with exposition dialogue from Charley as he lays out the entire plan for the reader (and probably for Hawkman as well).  I was really hoping that exposition would occur here so that we could get the glorious battle between the two.  As it is, next issue we will get not only Charley’s exposition of how eeeevil he is, but we will also get Carter’s exposition on how he faked his death.

Hawkman’s method of taking care of all of his enemies was brilliant at the same time it was cruel.  I loved it because it shows how ruthless Carter can really be.  Come on, Hummingbird being placed in a dark cage for the rest of her life is brutal and damn chilling.  Good stuff.  Plus, the final drawing of Hawkman in full battle regalia and the angry look on his face is an absolute beautiful image.  If that were made into a poster, I’d buy it.
