Synopsis
Hawkman and Hawkgirl are in New York City looking for a creature called the Monolith, a “golem” created by people to defend themselves against gangsters. Downtown, police are escorting Solomon Grundy to Riker’s Island, but he manages to escape. At New York University, Alice and Tilt are attending a lecture by Dr. Angelo Kinetti when news leaks of Grundy’s escape. Since they were nearby, Hawkman and Hawkgirl attempt to stop Grundy. Eventually they are assisted by Monolith and the three are able to apprehend Grundy once more. Later, Carter and Kendra go to the movies to see Annie Hall. Afterwards, Carter admits he had feelings for Domina Paris. The following day in St. Roch, Satana appears.
Review
Well, this was certainly an interesting, but frustrating issue. Except for the last couple of pages, it was a nice action-filled issue featuring characters created by Palmiotti and Gray in a separate mini-series. While I was annoyed at what seems to be shameless promotion, I like the action and the battle between the Hawks and Grundy. The issue, however, is saved by the ending in which we get an honest discussion of Carter’s feelings about Domina and Hawkgirl. It almost makes up for the rest of the issue. Then final two pages were also a nice touch, but (again) it comes across more as shameless promotion for the next storyline. At least in this case it is at least promoting Hawkman and not some other character.
Re-reading that paragraph above, it sounds very bitter and angry and that is partially true. I am not a fan of writers introducing previously used characters and expect that either I have read the other series so that this appearance makes sense or believes I would like these characters enough to buy the other series. However, the story was not all that intrusive and it didn’t really impact the Hawkman comic. In fact, remove Monolith and Alice and Tilt and the story still works to some degree.-- Review by MRB
