Synopsis

Carter Hall (aka Hawkman) is on the hunt for a vampire simply called Gray.  But first he must get through his horde of vampire allies.  Eleven hours ago, Hawkman and Hawkgirl investigated a crime scene and the death of nine vampires.  When Hawkgirl takes a closer look, one vampire rises and bites her in the neck!  Twelve days ago, Hawkman was visited by the head vampire, Gray, who turns out to be an old friend...he knew Hawkman during the Crusades, over 13 lives ago.  At that time, Hawkman had been a Bishop and deliver last rites to Gray, except he was still alive.  While waiting to die, vampires turned him into the undead.  Now...Gray wants revenge, including turning Hawkgirl into a vampire.  Hawkman tells Gray he can go to hell and then sets off the sprinkler system.  Thanks to Carter’s prayers and his past life as Bishop, the sprinklers contain holy water, which kills Gray and the vampires.  Later, Hawkgirl wants to know what Carter would have done if Kendra had turned into a vampire.  Carter tells her he would have killed her.

Review

This might have been a good issue if were not for the very confusing and unnecessary flash backs and shifts through time.  It completely ruined the flow of the story as I continually had to stop, check to see where I was within the continuity of the story and determine how each scene fit into the overall story.  Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it can work to flip back and froth through time, but for whatever reason the concept failed to work for me in this issue.  Despite this one problem, it was not a bad issue.  I always like it when Carter’s past lives make an impact on his current life and I thought the central idea behind Gray (an old friend left to die, but no undead via vampires) was intriguing.  And Hawkman’s resolution to defeat Gray and the Vampires was also well done.  Not only was it a neat little twist to killing vampire beyond the stake to the heart, but it also played upon Hawkman’s past life.  This is somewhat unexpected given that this is a fill-in issue until the new writer takes over in a couple of months, but it was nice to see.  -- Review by MRB
