Synopsis

Thomas Ludlow (aka The Spider) is holding Green Arrow at arrow point.  It was Ludlow who has been killing various rich people in a scheme to eliminate old partners of his father’s in order to take all of the profits for himself.  One of those partners was Green Arrow, whom the Spider was framing for those murders.  While Green Arrow and Spider trade arrows, Hawkgirl breaks free of the webbing binding her together.  She then smacks the Spider around a little bit.  Then Hawkman arrives just in time to take an arrow intended for Hawkgirl.  He pulls out the arrow and hits Spider, who manages to shoot an arrow as he falls and clips Hawkman’s wings.  He and Green Arrow fall out of the top-floor window.  As he falls, Green Arrow shoots Spider in the eye.  Hawkgirl comes to the rescue and saves the men.  By the time hey get back to the room, Spider is gone.  Later, Green Arrow is ready to leave St. Roch.  Before he goes, he tells Hawkman he needs to remove the helmet once and awhile.  That evening at the St. Roch Museum, Carter Hall arrives in a suit and tie to take Jayita out to dinner.  Elsewhere, Spider relearns how to shoot a bow with one eye.

Review

“You know, for someone who’s had thousands of years to figure out life, you’re pretty damn dense.”

This entire issue was mostly one long fight scene followed by a few epilogues to see what is going on with the characters.  I though the fight scene was okay, but at times it was confusing and I couldn’t help but chuckle and how often these guys missed each other.  I mean, Ollie kneels down to free Kendra and Spider can’t him when he is sitting still?  However, the visual of Ollie balancing on the webs and the face off in which Ollie shoots Spider’s arrows compensates for such things.  And the moment when Hawkman saves Kendra and shrugs off the arrow wound as if it were nothing was also great.  That essentially is the essence of Hawkman:  gives worse than he gets.

The final panel of Kendra watching Carter and Jayita leave for dinner was wonderful.  Rags did a great job to express her feelings of being rejected or passed over by the guy who so obviously had wanted her so much for so long.  Think about it.  Even though she wanted nothing to do with Carter, I am sure she liked the attention he gave her.  What doesn’t want to be wanted.  And then, suddenly, he finds someone new.  She may not have wanted to be with him, but it still hurts to have his affections turned elsewhere.  Rags did a wonderful job with that final panel.

I liked the final sequence of the story with Spider and the target practice.  I hope this small sequence indicates the Spider will become a part of the hawks rogue gallery.  Technically, I suppose, he should be part of the Green Arrow book given the whole archery thing, but since he is in this book, we’ll see if he comes back to haunt Hawkman (and perhaps Green Arrow in another team-up).-- MRB
