Synopsis
At the JLA watchtower, Sinestro continues his assault on Oliver Queen (aka Green Arrow) and Kyle Rayner. In Coast City, Parallax is free from Hal Jordan and destroys Jordan’s recreation of Coast City. At that moment, Kilowog falls at Parallax’s feet, courtesy of Ganthet, the last surviving Guardian of the Universe. Parallax attacks Ganthet and is soon helped by Guy Gardner and John Stewart. Ganthet, however, frees them from Parallax power and with Kilowog all of them turn to face Parallax, who is unimpressed…until the JLA, JSA, and Teen Titans join the battle. At the JLA watchtower, Sinestro continues his assault on Kyle Rayner. Hurt, Green Arrow takes Hal’s “emergency” ring and thrusts into the battery, reciting most of the Green Lantern oath. Sinestro mocks Ollie and tells him that no one believes in Hal. Ollie does however and with the ring sends an arrow straight into Sinestro’s chest. Sinestro is not impressed and attacks. Kyle Rayner saves Ollie just in time. Meanwhile, back at Coast City, the battle continues against Parallax. In the middle of the battle, Jordan tries to escape Parallax’s hold on him. Hal demands the Spectre’s help and Parallax is free. The Spectre tells Hal he is free of the disease and then leaves. Parallax then attempts to possess Ganthet who tells Hal to follow the light. Hal follows the light back to the coffin on the Watchtower where he takes back his ring from Ollie and tells Sinestro to “Get the hell away from them.”
Review
I remember reading a few stories with Sinestro and he never seemed as dangerous and believable as he does here. He seems like a real threat when he attacks Kyle and Ollie and I got to hand it to Geoff Johns for that. The yellow impurity was very laughable; as a result the battles between Sinestro and other Green Lanterns became laughable since it was all about over coming the yellow impurity or finding ways around the yellow ring to defeat him. With the retconn from the previous issue, this is no longer the case, or least no longer the case for this particular fight and it shows. Sinestro is less of a joke because the yellow ring is no longer treated as such. I also enjoyed Green Arrow’s moment with the ring (and him forgetting the GL oath). One would think it might be easy to use the ring, but this seems to be not the case. I am curious to see if this is played up in future issues of Green Lantern (assuming they give Hal is own title which I would think they would).
I found it interesting how quickly Ganthet was able to free John and Guy compared to how hard it was to free Kilowog. And I liked the full page of the JLA, JSA, and Teen Titans coming to join the battle against Parallax. -- MRB
