Synopsis

In Highway Mill, New Mexico, Kilowog continues his assault on Ganthet, the last surviving Guardian of the Universe, but to no avail.  In the battle, Kyle must use his ring to protect himself and in the process gets bombarded with images of Guy Gardner and John Stewart who are “lost” to the power of the ring.  Kyle fights the ring and prays that Hal Jordan “better be worth this.”  Kyle transports Hal’s coffin to the JLA Watchtower on the moon, which has been trashed.  Meanwhile, the Spectre has placed Hal Jordan outside of Coast City.  Hal wants to know who is responsible and an image of Parallax tells him:  “You did, Jordan.  We Did.”  Parallax tells Hal to let him take complete possession.  The Spectre appears and decides to tell Hal the truth.  At the same time Kyle Rayner explains it all to Oliver Queen (aka Green Arrow):  Parallax is a yellow entity made from living fear.  The Guardians knew he had to be stopped and thus imprisoned Parallax in the central power battery (and creating the yellow impurity).  Over the millennium Parallax was forgotten.  Somehow, Parallax survived and used Hal Jordan’s feelings of rage, sorrow, and vengeance when Coast City was destroyed by Mongul.  When Jordan destroyed the central battery, it freed Parallax, who then grafted itself to Jordan’s soul.  Back at Coast City, Parallax breaks free from Hal’s body!  On the watchtower, Green Arrow tries to digest all of the information and demands to know who woke up Parallax in the first place. Several yellow arrows pierce Green Arrow, revealing who was responsible:  Sinestro!

Review

At last!  The explanation.  And what a whopper.  There are some revelations that knock you out with one punch.  There are others that are subtle.  This is both.  I mean, not only do we get the explanation for Hal’s return, but we also get the explanation for the yellow impurity, for Hal’s madness, for the strange behavior of the Spectre.  I am amazed that Johns was able to tie in all these different parts and make it cohesive and have it make sense.  And, suddenly, the behavior of the other characters makes sense as well.  This is why Kyle is afraid.  This is why Guy and John went berserk.  This is why Hal is acting weird.  And then Sinestro appears.  A couple of pages earlier, they repeated Hal as Parallax had snapped Sinsetro’s neck, so this will be another piece of retconn, but the rest of it made such sense I am willing to forgive this one.  I mean look at the page and you can see his neck was literally turned around.  I can’t wait to see where this one goes.  -- MRB
